6 Reasons to minimize soda to keep your teeth healthy and prevent obesity

Sodas have been a part of the diet ever since they have been created. They are bubbly, refreshing, sweet and just plain delicious. People can’t seem to get enough of it, they are simply addicted to it. But, why does it need to be avoided, if not eliminated, from our lives. Here are some of the reasons why.

1. Increase body fat and cause obesity

Sodas are a high-caloric drink, that does not even have any nutritional value at all. The consumption of soda, coupled with poor diet, exercise and genetics, can really lead to obesity.

Soda cannot be blamed alone. It is important that everyone, especially young people who are hooked on sodas, should practice a well-balanced lifestyle. A lifestyle that is mindful of the calories that are consumed daily and burn it with regular exercise, and the avoidance of sugary drinks.

2. Damages the kidneys

Kidneys are the ones responsible for removing wastes and toxins out of the body. Kidney diseases, particularly CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease), can hinder these functions completely. The consumption of soda every day predisposes a person to such a disease. It also contributes to the formation of kidney stones due to its high phosphorus content. Kidney stones can also form because of the high fructose content in sodas, which can also destroy kidney cells.

3. Destroys the teeth and causes tooth decay

Once the sugars contained in your favorite soda come in contact with the bacteria in the mouth, it forms acids. This acid can attack and damage your teeth, making it prone to cavities and decay. You might think that sugar-free sodas are safer, but they aren’t. They, too, contain acids that harm the teeth. Another problem is erosion, which happens when acids come in contact with the tooth enamel. The acid would reduce the hardness of the tooth, eating away at the enamel. Soda, together with poor hygiene, are partners in oral disaster.

4. Can lead to diabetes

Diabetes can be influenced through genetics, obesity and the lack of exercise. But, sodas and other sweet beverages are very high in sugar content that predisposes a person to develop diabetes. A 20-ounce bottle of soda contains about 16 tablespoons of sugar causes insulin levels to spike up. The liver reacts to the insulin by turning the sugar into fat. Some of the fat is stored, that is why, weight gain is manifest among diabetics.

5. An impaired digestive system

Sodas are very high in acid content. It has a pH of about 2.5, which means it is 10,000 times more acidic than water. A pH of 1 can already eat away at a battery, so a 2.5 pH is just as dangerous, especially when ingested. Companies that manufacture sodas, often mask the acidity of the beverage by its high fructose content. That is why, consumers cannot tell how acidic the drink is. So, regular consumption of sodas can irritate the stomach that can lead to bloating, gas, cramping and exacerbation of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Soda can also affect your teeth. It might damage it to the point that you might need dental crowns.

6. Heart diseases

Sodas and other sweet drinks can predispose a person to develop heart diseases. The person who drinks them regularly may have risk factors that include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, weight gain, diabetes and obesity. All of which are contributed by soda-drinking.

Sodas are undoubtedly one of the most delicious drinks anyone has ever had. But, is it really worth all the risk it can do to your body. It’s okay to have a bottle once in a while, but never drink it more than you should, if you want to live long enough to see your grandkids.
