Online Betting With Sportsbook

Placing bets on contests has been an American tradition since the country was founded in the early 1700s. Back then people placed bets on just about anything that moved, including cockfights, horse races and men brawling in the bars. Horse racing was the most popular sport to bet on for many years and is where serious betting started.

American Baseball

Baseball became the most popular sport in America during the later part of the 1800s and betting on teams was very popular, especially in the Eastern part of the US. By 1920 people were placing bets on college teams and hoping to win big and improve their situation during the depression.

In 1951 the US Congress approved a 10% tax on all US sports bets that served to legalize betting and give it the respectability it had been missing up to that point. Turf clubs, as they were called at the time, started opening all around the country and race information was posted on chalkboards and updated by hand.

Sportsbook Capital

When the 10% tax was lowered to just 2% in1974, casinos started opening sportsbooks and within a year the first sportsbook opened at the Union Plaza Casino in Las Vegas, followed a year later by the opening of a sportsbook at the Stardust Casino, also in Las Vegas. Within a couple of years, Las Vegas was the sports book capital of the United States.

During the 1990s, sportsbooks became available on the Internet and quickly became the betting place of choice for many people because they could place bets from home. Online sportbook sites made it possible for betting to become a global sport with sportsbooks available around the world in countries like Costa Rica, Ireland, and England. By 2005 the money generated by online sports books was estimated to be around 70 billion dollars.
