Organic Food – why is it good for you?
You often see it advertised ‘organic food’, ’100% organic’, products scream their ‘organic’ nature from the roof tops, desperate to convince you that it means that they are better, that the product is more worthy than the non-organic variety.
But why is that? Why is organic food considered better for you?
Pesticides – To be considered organic food pesticides are not allowed to be used on the crops. The reason for this is that pesticides damage the environment, cause harm to other animals than just the pests that they kill and can seep into the crops themselves.
This means that if a food is called ‘organic’ you know it will have done less damage to the environment and you can consume it without worrying about whether it contains any pesticides.
The crops also are unable to be genetically tampered with. Many non-organic crops are GM crops (genetically modified), designed to produce a bigger harvest or grow more quickly. But the effects of such genetic tampering are, in many peoples of eyes, not widely enough researched.
Any food claiming to be organic must not be tampered with at a genetic level, so you know that it is a completely naturally occurring crop.
Organic meat means that the animals are better treated. There is no ‘battery farming‘ done for organic animals, they must be kept in habitable conditions.
Organic meat also means that no growth hormones have been injected into the animals to grow bigger quicker, which means that you know no such hormones can be entering your own blood system.
